Laura Collins began her career in dermatology in 2005 within a large multi-specialty medical group. Her interest in dermatology began while she was an undergraduate student working as a medical assistant in dermatology. During graduate school, she continued her enthusiastic study of the specialty through internships. Laura finds the experience of managing dermatologic conditions exciting and rewarding. She values taking the time to teach patients how to care for their conditions. Dermatology is a dynamic field and Laura continues to enhance her knowledge and training through continuing education and experiences to keep current with the latest treatments and procedures.
Laura received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Northern Illinois University (NIU) in 2000. She practiced as a registered nurse in a medical/surgical and orthopedics unit for four years. Laura completed the Adult Nurse Practitioner at NIU and earned her Masters Degree in 2004. After starting her career in dermatology in 2005, she has precepted many nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and medical students throughout the years. She has been a speaker for the Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nurses as well as for community hospital and community educational events. She has also participated in several “SPOT me Skin Cancer Screening Programs” during her career.
In March of 2008, Laura became one of the first ever 242 nurse practitioners in the United States to pass the initial Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner (DCNP) exam offered by the Dermatology Nursing Certification Board (DNCB). The DNCB was formed to promote the highest standards of nursing practice for validating proficiency as a nurse practitioner specializing in dermatology. The DCNP credentials are valid for only three years. Recertification can be obtained through rigorous contact hour requirements specifically related to dermatology. Laura also holds the title of an Advanced Certified Telemedicine/Telehealth Professional (ACTTP).
