Can Topical Castor Oil Benefit Your Skin?

Over the past several years, castor oil has gained popularity on social media promoting its benefits for our skin for anti-aging and acne. But where does it come from, and can it yield results? In this blog, we will dive into this popular topical skincare trend.

What is Castor Oil?

Very simply, castor oil is a vegetable oil that comes from the reeds of the Ricinus communis plant that is native to Africa and Asia. This yellow-tinted oil contains several fatty acids and phytochemicals, ricinoleic acid, linoleic acid, and palmitic acids, which are commonly used as emollients and surfactants in cosmetics.

The use of castor oil in skincare dates back to ancient Egyptian times when it was used for moisturizers and as a base in perfumes. It has also been widely used in Africa in hair care products and to treat skin and scalp conditions.

In today’s world, castor oil is still used widely in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, however it is also found in many foods, used as an industrial lubricant, and as a biodiesel fuel component. We can also find it in many household items including paint and cleaning products.

How Can Castor Oil Help Our Skin?

Castor oil has gained popularity in skincare because it can soften skin, provide hydration, and even out skin tone and texture. There is some evidence that it increases skin elasticity and may boost collagen production. This makes it very marketable for anti-aging purposes.

Another benefit is that Castor oil is non-comedogenic, which means that it is not likely to clog your pores. We see it used in acne and psoriasis products because it is reported to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, as well as exfoliative properties.

An additional positive aspect of castor oil is that it is considered a “natural” moisturizer.

Are There Negatives to Using Castor Oil?

Although castor oil is a natural product, we recommend proceeding with caution. In some patients, it can cause an allergic reaction, which is reported as the most common side effect. This can be in the form of simple skin irritation, itching, swelling, and a rash.

If you are interested in trying a topical product that contains it, we recommend going slow and performing an easy test to see if you may be able to tolerate it. Take a small amount of the product and gently place it on the inner aspect of the crook of your arm at bedtime. If no reaction is seen in the morning, you could try proceeding with the product for its intended use. If, however, a rash or skin irritation has appeared, it would be best not to try applying the product to your face. Reactions can also develop at any time, sometimes months to years after starting use, and even if the initial trial went well, you should always discontinue the use of any product that could potentially be irritating to your skin.

The Verdict?

Castor oil overall has limited evidence supporting the popularity on its uses on social media. If no skin reactions are experienced when using it, it might be a suitable choice for a natural moisturizer. However, there are many other more effective products out there for anti-aging with proven scientific results.
