Tea Tree Oil In Skincare

Chances are you have heard of an essential oil called Tea Tree Oil. This oil has been around for many years in the retail skincare space in many different capacities. But what is it? And can it help with common skin conditions such as acne?

What is Tea Tree Oil?

Tea Tree Oil is an oil extracted from the leaves of the Melaleuca Alternifolia tree. It was historically used by Australian Aboriginals as an herbal medicine and antiseptic. It is known that this oil has antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Because of these attributes, Tea Tree Oil has found uses treating:

  • Acne
  • Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)
  • Ringworm (tinea corporis)
  • Yeast infections (tinea versicolor)
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis

How Can Tea Tree Oil Help With Acne?

We have some studies that show this oil can potentially help to reduce inflammatory acne due to its reported ability to regulate sebum (oil) production in the skin. This can reduce the amount of oil and shine being experienced. Its anti-inflammatory properties may help to reduce the red and inflamed types of acne lesions.

Tea Tree Oil in Anti-aging

Research has demonstrated that Tea Tree Oil possesses antioxidant properties. We know that antioxidants are beneficial to protect the skin from free radical damage. Antioxidants also work to increase skin elasticity which can help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Tea Tree Oil in Skincare

Over the years, Tea Tree Oil has been incorporated into many different skin and body care products. These may include:

  • Serums
  • Creams
  • Moisturizers
  • Cleansers
  • Oils
  • Shampoos

However, as good as this ingredient may sound, they should be used with caution and, if utilized, used correctly. Pure Tea Tree Oil can be a very potent skin irritant. It should never be applied directly to the skin without being mixed with another carrier oil or combined with another agent. Tea Tree Oil vapors can cause respiratory irritation and should be used with caution by individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Coughing, shortness of breath, and throat irritation can occur. It is also important to note that Tea Tree Oil should be kept out of the reach of children, never be ingested orally, and is toxic to pets.

How Should You Use Tea Tree Oil?

If you would like to use Tea Tree Oil or incorporate it into your skincare regimen as a natural remedy, we recommend a few safety tips:

  • Always check for skin sensitivity first. Apply a small amount to the inner aspect of your forearm and wait twenty-four hours to see if any skin reaction or sensitivity occurs. If not, try using the product as directed.
  • Never apply Tea Tree Oil around the eyes.
  • Discontinue use if you develop any type of skin reaction such as itching, burning, redness, stinging, dryness, or other irritation.
  • Seek emergency medical attention if you develop facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Tea Tree Oil is often used for skin issues, but official dosage guidelines are not yet established by research. Our recommendation is to proceed slowly with caution, especially if you have sensitive skin.
